Experts in the subject always mention the fact that motivation plays and important role into the learning process, therefore; this project has been elaborated thinking on one of the weakest aspect of the English language teaching-learning process.

Interactive activities and techniques to apply in class is a big concern that English teachers have at the moment of planning the class. This workshop is aimed to motivate teachers so they will be self-motivated to encourage students in the classroom.

III.OBJECTIVES

3.1 To provide the participants a variety of motivating communicative activities to be applied by them during the didactic and pedagogical teaching and learning process.

3.2 To help participants to develop grouping techniques in a way that at being engaged in those activities it will be easier to apply them with their students.

GROUP TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP FOR THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH

TRAINER´S GUIDE

SESSION 1 Sharing experiences

Organize the participants in pairs. Ask them to remember the games they have played at the university, or the ones they have played in training events.

Accept the participants´ answers. Remark the following:

  • Games add variety to the range of learning situations.
  • Games can be used to change the pace of a lesson.
  • Games can be used to interrupt long lessons and renew students´energy.
  • Games can give “hidden” practice of certain language points.

SESSION 2 Demonstrations

Organize students in pairs. Give them enough time to evoke the games they have used / played.

Lead a whole class discussion so they can share their ideas.

Demonstrate two games from every category, except projects and communication games. Use the ones suggested below. Ask participants to note down every single step of the game.

Category Game 1 Game 2
Language points What have I been doing? How old is the number…?
Production games Celebrities Coffee-potting
Fillers The noughts and crosses quiz Hangman

SESSION 3 Reflection on the type of games developed

Have a short discussion on this task and remark the following:

  1. Games should be used according to the level of the students.
  2. The rules should be explained with clarity and must be followed strictly, otherwise the game will not accomplish its aim.
  3. Sometimes cheating is allowed. That makes games funnier.

SESSION 4

  1. Games presentation practice.

Give the participants enough time to do their practice. Do not comment anything so far.

Feedback

Let the participants express their feelings and self-criticism. Tell them that practice makes the master.
